People often reference Raymond Chandler as a big influence on the Coen Brothers. Ethan and Joel have even talked about it themselves so I wouldn't say it's just hearsay. I found this interesting article that compares Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep with Elliot Gould in The Long Goodbye. Two different films with two different actors both portraying the same type of character that Jeff Bridges played as The Dude in The Big Lebowski. It's pretty interesting if you're into this level of film geekery. You could compare this to the different films that have borrowed on the story of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo. Clint Eastwood in A Fist Full of Dollars and Bruce Willis in Last Man Standing, along with other film examples, would be interesting to compare. Speaking of films like The Big Lebowski, have any of you seen Cutter's Way? Here's one that isn't mentioned very often, but it stars Jeff Bridges and is very, very similar to Lebowski. I've always been surprised the Coens don't mention it as a starting point for their film. Here's an interesting article comparing Cutter's Way with the book it's based on.
