If you like the visual look and feel of a Coen Brother film, there's a good chance Roger Deakins had something to do with it. I believe he has been the cinematographer for 9 out of the 13 films the Coen Brothers have released to date. He also worked on A Serious Man, which is set to release later this year and is working on Hail Ceasar. IMDB currently has the later listed as "pre-production" so I'm not sure if it'll actually be released in 2009 or not. All in all, that makes 11 out of 15 films. Pretty impressive. In fact, you should check out Deakins' IMDB listing. It's quite a great resume. You'll probably be surprised at some of the films he has worked on.
Another little known fact is that Roger belongs to both the ASC and the BSC. Those stand for American Society of Cinematographers and British Society of Cinematographers. That's quite an honor. I can only think of one or two other people where I've seen both sets of initials after their names when the credits roll.
Out of the nine Coen Brother films Deakins has worked on, he has received Oscar nominations for four of them. In fact, he has been double-nominated the past couple years. We're really hoping he'll actually win one of those little gold statues this year.
